Of course, it is known that of the handful of cultural and musical meccas around the world, the Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s New Afrika Shrine is counted as one.
It is for this reason, that the GQ style team, paid a pilgrimage visit to the shrine and shot a style shoot turning the shrine faithfuls into instant models.
Did they nail it? Certainly, more than we can say for a select few who have once been mandated with the task of doing themed shoots of this sort.
This is what Nadine Ijewere and Ruth Ossai should have done when international brands asked them to come and shoot in Nigeria. This is how you respectfully shoot your country for international consumption. https://t.co/UW8Ay4XUNt

Speaking on this, Mobolaji Dawodu, GQStyle Fashion Director had these few words to say;
“The Shrine is a refuge for the youth in Lagos—it’s a place where you can come and be free, maybe get a job, have a community—and these are some of the young cats we met there. We cast and dressed everybody on the spot with traditional Nigerian clothes and then these designer coats. I just looked for interesting characters. There was something about each of them that struck me; I think it comes across in the photos. It’s a vibe. You feel it. If someone has style, you don’t have to do too much. You put a tailored garment on them and they just own it.”
From 25 year old Adeyemo Akeem, who might have a solid future in modelling if we go by his effortless pose and stance, to 30 year old Olayinka Crow, who stands complete in a white and blue bathroom slippers – a national totem!- these shrine faithfuls, are adorned in pieces from luxury brands, and they pull it off!
