Five Horror Movies To Check Out This Friday 13th

Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day in Western superstition. It happened when the 13th day of a month falls on a Friday, and it can happen once or more times a year. In 2017, it occurs twice, on January 13 and today, obviously. There will be two Friday the 13ths per year until 2020, where 2021 and 2022 will have just one occurrence. How fascinating.

In the spirit of borrowing culture, I’ll be sharing some of the best rated, also a few personal favs, horror movies of all time. I’d say enjoy but I’d rather you be petrified instead.

tale-of-tales-toutTale of tales is a visually splendid narrative of three neighboring kingdoms, each with a magnificent castle, from which kings and queens, and princes and princesses ruled. One king was a fornicating libertine, another captivated by a strange animal, while one of the queens was obsessed by her wish for a child. Sorcerers and fairies, fearsome monsters, ogres and old washerwomen, acrobats and courtesans are the protagonists of this loose interpretation of the celebrated tales of Giambattista Basile. Hahhahahhahhahhaha I love it so much. Oh and look at that name! Talk about catchy. *sigh*

  • THE CONJURING 2 (2016)

conjuringfrWell duh! The popular story of Lorraine and Ed Warren who specialize paranormal investigations, but this time they travel to north London in one of their most terrifying investigations to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits. Spooky right? I’d watch it if I were you. *insert evil laugh*

  • THE THING (1982)

The film opens enigmatically with a dog being chased by two men in a helicopter firing at it from above. Even after the dog finds shelter at an American research outpost, the men in the helicopter land and keep shooting. The kind dog-loving Americans saved the dog but then they soon realize that it changes into the “Thing”, which has the ability to mutate into anything it kills. For the rest of the film, the men fight a losing (and very gory) battle against it, never knowing if one of their own dwindling number is the Thing in disguise. I love this song.

  • THE OTHERS (2001)

the others

On the secluded Isle of Jersey in the final days of World War II, a young woman waits in vain for her beloved husband to return from war. Grace has been raising her two young children alone in her beautiful, cavernous Victorian mansion, the one place she believes them to be safe. But they are not safe. Not anymore. When a new trio of servants arrives to replace the crew that inexplicably disappeared, startling events begin to unfold. Grace’s daughter reveals she has been communicating with unexplained spirits that come and go in every room of the house. At first, Grace refuses to believe in her children… we all know how that goes. Long story short, SHIT GOT REAL.

A haunted house makes no secret of the fact it’s not pleased with its new tenants in this independent tale of supernatural horror. Haunted houses are a personal favorite so this one just had to make it. The story is beautifully told despite the low budget special effects. It’s also very popular so you should watch it. NOW!
