British Vogue Appoints Ghanaian Born Stylist, Edward Enninful, As Its First Black Editor

British Vogue took the fashion world by surprise when it announced Ghanaian born former model and stylist Edward Enninful, as its new editor.

The Condé Nast International chairman and chief executive Jonathan Newhouse announced Alexandra Shulman’s successor this morning, describing Enninful with these colorful words;

 “….An influential figure in the communities of fashion, Hollywood and music which shape the cultural zeitgeist. By virtue of his talent and experience, Edward is supremely prepared to assume the responsibility of British Vogue.”

Edward Enninful was born in Ghana and spent his childhood in London and at the age of 16, he was model-scouted and his fashion career began. He started as fashion director of i-D at age 19, becoming the youngest ever fashion director for an international publication, and worked there for nearly two decades. His career to date has seen him work for Italian Vogue, American Vogue, W Magazine, as well as a consultant on numerous fashion campaigns.

His many accolades include;

  • The Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator at the 2014 British Fashion Awards
  • OBE – Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire – October 2017
Edward Enniful, 45, who is currently creative and fashion director of W magazine, will take over from Alexandra Shulman by August 1st as confirmed by Vogue.
