A growing number of women are beginning to appreciate and prefer being stay-at-home moms. This could be because their spouse is financially stable and able to take care of the home or due to relocation or just because they prefer to stay back to take care of the children. 

Staying at home could be boring at times and in light of the recent economic issues been faced; more and more women are thinking of starting a business they can run from home that won’t interfere too much with the home front. 

Here is a list of business ideas you can do from home to show you that you can be at home and still make money

  1. Freelance writing/ Blogging/ Virtual assistant

Do you have a flair for writing short stories, articles? You could be a freelance writer, a lot of magazines, newspapers, blogs and online platforms employ the services of freelance content writers. All you have to do is to know your niche be it fashion, lifestyle, sports or beauty and be on the lookout for job offers. The same goes for virtual assistant jobs; a lot of assistant jobs are now being outsourced via the internet so try to tap into that or you can just start up a blog of your own to focus on anything you are interested in.

  1. Web developer/Graphic designer

If you have web developing or graphic skills, this is the time to let it shine. Put the word out through friends and relatives and you are in business. Companies, businesses, and individuals are constantly looking for graphic designers and web developers, so if you are good at this, you will make money.


  1. Day care center

If you have a child or children, you would probably have ‘baby whispering’ skills. Start from babysitting your friends’ kids and then progress from there

  1. Catering

These days a lot of people don’t have the time to cook at home or maybe they don’t have the skills, so there is a ready market for catering home-made foods. You could also go into cake or pastries making and small chops. You would most likely need a little training if you are going to focus on cakes and pastries but you probably already have the soup cooking skills. All you have to do is advertise your services, cook and package in attractive containers and be ready to deliver.

  1. Fashion designing/Handcraft

If you are a creative person, you may be interested in handcrafts. There are so many crafts you can start such as fashion designing, bead making and wire works, Ankara craft, paper craft, leather works etc. You will most definitely need to be trained before you can start this.

This includes making detergent, bar soap, insecticide, air freshener, liquid dish wash etc. You could make and package them in attractive containers and sell them to your friends and family

  1. Start selling on an online store

Without leaving the comfort of your home, you can buy and sell items to people all over the country. All you have to do is to have online stores on e-commerce websites like jumia and konga or if you have enough capital you could have your own e-commerce website and then place your goods for sale. You could convert a spare room in your house to your warehouse for storing your items or you could just ‘drop ship’ as that will save you the hassles of space and delivery.

  1. Home tutoring

If you are learned on a particular topic or subject, you could make money on it. Start tutoring lessons in your neighborhood and get paid for it.
