Folarin Falana popularly known as Falz or Falz “The Bahd Guy” was born in Lagos State. He is a Nigerian rapper, entertainer and record label owner of Bahd Guys Records. He studied LLB Honours degree in Law at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom. He then came back to Nigeria where he attended the Nigerian Law School in Abuja and was called for the bar in 2012 qualifying as a Barrister.
Falz is the son of renowned Nigerian legal practitioners Funmi and Femi Falana. His father, Femi Falana has lots of monumental achievements within the Nigerian legal industry. It’s obvious he comes from an academic and not a musical background. What then led this Barrister to completely change direction from his law career and delve full time as an Entertainer into the Nigerian Entertainment industry? Let’s find out.
His Music career commenced in Secondary school after forming a group called “The School Boys” with his friend. However, it became a serious affair after graduating from the University. His professional music career was launched in 2009 when he released his mixtape titled “Shakara” for free download online. In 2014, “Marry Me” featuring Yemi Alade and Poe was the song which formally launched him into the spotlight. This same song got him nominations for “Best Collaboration of the Year”, “Best Rap Act of The Year” and also “Best New Act to Watch” at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. His accolades include winning the nomination for “Best Street Hiphop Artiste of the Year” at The Headies in 2015 for his popular single “Ello Bae”. His latest track “Bahd, Baddo, Baddest” in collaboration with indigenous rapper Olamide is also a hit at the moment.
Since then, Falz has not shown any signs of slowing down. We are only in the first half of the year and he has already won the “Best Actor in Comedy Movies / Series” at the 2016 Africa Choice Awards for his role as Segun in Funke Akindele’s Jenifa’s Diary TV Series. On Sunday 26th of June, 2016 he also won the “Viewer’s Choice Best New International Act” category at the 16th annual 2016 BET Awards.
He has done collaborations with many top Nigerian artists including MI, Simi, Olamide, Phyno, Reekado Banks, Davido and many more. His successful career change can be associated with his passion for music; unique/innovative entertaining style; and finally his ability to talk about topical messages through his music.
