Sleep is a naturally recurring state of mind. During this period of sleep all voluntary muscles is inhibited and there is less interaction with the surroundings.
We’ve heard the term beauty sleep used playfully over the years but the truth is that a proper night rest is actually a beauty routine.
Sleep, when observed regularly and adequately not only leaves you looking well rested and feeling refreshed in the morning but actually improves your looks. It helps with puffy eyes, wrinkles, you also look younger and healthier .
It has been proven that the human body naturally repairs itself between the hours of 12 and 4am. The top layer of the skin is made up of closely packed cells which are constantly shed during sleep. Also the skin’s metabolic rate speeds up and many of the body cells show increased production and reduced breakdown of protein.
Proteins are the building blocks of life needed for cell growth and tissue repair from damage caused by the sun and other environmental factors.
Note that daytime sleep cannot compensate for a good night’s sleep as the energy needed for tissue repair is not available during the day – it is being diverted into other activities carried out during this period.
It’s also important to remember that as the skin ages, its ability to restore and repair itself slows down, so it is more important not to skip a good night’s rest and incorporate more anti-aging products into our skincare diet.
