“It costs a lot of money to look this cheap.” Dolly Parton said when asked about her signature look. A signature look is a distinguishing style denoting attributes of a person or group of people. A signature look is something which is uniquely personal to you and which people will recognise as typically ‘you’.
Your signature look is the flagship look of your own personal style and while fashions change over time, style does not, and so to have a unique style will bring a consistency and unique appeal to each of your other outfits. Your signature look is the outfit people picture you wearing when they think of you. We all like to test the waters on trends from time to time, but more often than not, we adopt a “signature” look that we find ourselves reaching for almost daily.
It could be a bold lipstick choice or a cat eye, but whatever it may be, it’s about as tied to our personalities as our clothing choices or hairstyle. What does your personal make-up choice say about you?
1. Statement Lip
Your signature look might be a certain type of makeup, a specific piece of jewellery, or a particular item of clothing. Alternatively it can simply be a colour that you use repeatedly in your ensembles.
What it says about you: Red, pink or something more unexpected, a girl who favours a statement lip above all other makeup most likely loves the spotlight. A statement lip is bold and impossible to ignore, but it’s also a total “look” in one step, which implies that you probably have some other tricks up your sleeve, too.
2. Natural Look
To develop a signature look you really have to dig deep into your aesthetic preferences and likes and separate essential components from those that just dilute or distract. All of this digging will not only help you refine your overall personal style, but also improve your own creative awareness and confidence.
What it says about you: if you always opt for a natural look, then you’re low-key and no-fuss, but you also know what your best features are and exactly how to play them up. You like to look like yourself, but you also like to look put-together, which is why you prefer natural makeup—foundation applied with a light hand, corrective concealer, a bit of shadow or gloss—over a bare face.
3. Smoky Eyes
A signature look is best made up of one or two items, or a bold colour that can be added into the fray. Alternatively it might consist of a specific type of makeup (a bright pink lipstick for example) or hair style.
What it says about you: If you always go for “smokey eyes make-up” then subtlety isn’t really your thing, but you still like to fly slightly under the radar rather than stand out from the crowd at first glance. A smoky eye is sexy and dramatic but not over-the-top, which describes you to a tee. You don’t need to be the centre of attention, but hey, you certainly wouldn’t mind.
4. Cat Eyes
Having a signature look signifies a considerable amount of self-knowledge: you know what you like, who you are and what suits you. This confidence or rather, authenticity, enhances what you are trying to express through your look and makes it all the more powerful.
What it says about you: They’re called cat eyes for a reason: You’re sneaky, introspective, and a little bit more calculated than most, but not in a bad way. Let’s just say you don’t miss a trick. You also have above-average patience and tactical skill, which is the only means by which to explain the time and effort you take to execute the perfect winged liner every morning.
5. Just Mascara
Pretty much every single style icon, fromCleopatra to Omotola Ekehinde to Victoria Beckham had or has a strong signature, infact having a defined signature look is very much a prerequisite to becoming a style icon.
What it says about you: You may not have much time to apply make-up each day, but it doesn’t really make that much of a difference to you. You don’t mind showing your bare skin to the world, so long as you’ve got a little bit of emphasis on your eyes, you’re good to go. They are the windows to the soul, after all.
